Bicyclists, runners, and hikers made an estimated 1.4 million visits to the Great Allegheny Passage in 2020, up 50 percent from the year before, and higher than the prior peak in 2017, according to this analysis performed by Dr. Andrew Herr of St. Vincent College. Contributing to this spike was the popularity of outdoor recreation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Features in the Washington Post and at Fodor’s Travel also introduced the GAP to new audiences.
