Somerset County will close the Big Savage Tunnel for the 2026-27 winter season on Wednesday, November 25. This seasonal closure, performed annually, protects the lining of the tunnel from freeze-thaw cycles brought on by high winds, cold temperatures, and wet, snowy conditions at high elevation. Please note that there is no detour, and local roads are narrow and treacherous. Please plan your winter excursions elsewhere on the GAP. The tunnel will reopen in late March or early April depending on snowfall and temperature; we will update this page with an exact date when it is announced.
