Somerset County closed the Big Savage Tunnel for the 2025-26 winter season on Wednesday, November 26. This seasonal closure, performed annually, protects the lining of the tunnel from freeze-thaw cycles brought on by high winds, cold temperatures, and wet, snowy conditions at high elevation. Please note that there is no detour, and local roads are narrow and treacherous. Please plan your winter excursions elsewhere on the GAP. The tunnel will reopen in late March or early April, depending on weather, and the date will be posted here as soon as it is selected.
