Somerset County closed the Big Savage Tunnel on December 1, 2022 for the winter, and will reopen it again on March 31, 2023. Cold temperatures, high winds, and freeze/thaw cycles threaten to crack the tunnel’s lining, so in order to protect the lining and extend its life, crews close it each season. There is no detour.
