A segment of the Great Allegheny Passage between Rockwood (mile marker 43.8) and the parking lot at Markleton (mile marker 50.0) reopened on the afternoon October 9. Professional contractors deployed by Somerset County completed the excavation of approximately 300 feet of steep and unstable hillside, removed fallen trees and rocks, cleared clogged culverts, and resurfaced several hundred feet of damaged trail surface. Many thanks to Somerset County for coordinating this repair and remediation.
Many thanks to Allegheny Trail House, Bill’s Car and Transport Service, 2 Wheel Escapes, and Wheelzup Adventures, for teaming up to provide unprecedented daily shuttle service around this closure between June 24 and October 9. Thanks also to the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy, which arranged and subsidized this service, and to Confluence Tourism Association and the Somerset County Recreation and Trails Association for contributing funds to this effort.
Please travel cautiously through this area as crews remove gates and signs and perform some additional surface smoothing over the next week. Enjoy your next outing!
