Big thanks to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) for outfitting the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy and its partners with toolkits and training for best-in-class trail maintenance practices. Its new certification program, Training Regional Advocates, Investing in Long-Term Sustainability (T.R.A.I.L.S.), is increasing the organizational capacity of segment owners and volunteer groups along the Great Allegheny Passage. Those performing maintenance between Cumberland and Downtown Pittsburgh now have access to customized ARCGIS apps and dashboards to identify and track trail surface, structural, and drainage issues, all with the goal of preserving and improving the experience of bicyclists and hikers. A shout-out to the team at Environmental Planning and Design for assembling a thoughtful plan for long-term maintenance, and for creating a detailed baseline inventory of assets over all 150 miles using the tools that PEC developed.
