Sharpsburg, Maryland is a small, well-preserved town that makes an ideal stopping point for  bicyclists riding the C&O Canal Towpath, sitting just a short pedal from the canal at Snyders Landing (quietest way to road-ride into town) and Shepherdstown Pike (most direct but more traffic). The town’s quiet streets are lined with tidy brick and stone homes, many dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, giving Sharpsburg an authentic, unhurried small-town charm rather than a manufactured “historic district” feel. Travelers can refuel at local cafes and shops, browse antique stores, and enjoy the walkable scale of the town before continuing their ride or exploring further afield.

Adjacent to Antietam

Sharpsburg sits immediately adjacent to Antietam National Battlefield, serving as the closest town and gateway to this pivotal Civil War site, where visitors can tour the battlefield’s rolling farmland, monuments, and visitor center just minutes from Main Street. Beyond its Civil War history, the surrounding countryside offers scenic orchards, farmland vistas, and easy access to the Potomac River, making Sharpsburg a great base for a day of exploring on two wheels — whether combining a canal ride with a battlefield visit or simply soaking in the pastoral Western Maryland landscape.

Churches and Chapels

Sharpsburg is also home to several historic churches and cemeteries worth a visit. Many of the town’s church buildings, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Sharpsburg’s Lutheran and Reformed congregations, date to the 19th century and served as makeshift hospitals for wounded soldiers during the Battle of Antietam. Just outside town, on the battlefield itself, stands the iconic Dunker Church — a simple whitewashed building that became one of the most recognized landmarks of the battle and still anchors the western edge of the battlefield today. History buffs can also visit Tolson’s Chapel, a well-preserved African American church and schoolhouse built after the Civil War, along with the adjacent Mt. Moriah Cemetery, both of which speak to the town’s Reconstruction-era history and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
