A quick stop to get started
A modern replica of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad’s 1910 train station now serves as a staffed visitor center complete with GAP merchandise, books, maps, and bathrooms. It houses the headquarters of the Regional Trail Corporation, a nonprofit organization that built and maintains sections of the GAP in Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Fayette Counties. A conference room in the back is cleverly decorated with medallions and signs from trails and footpaths all over the country. A combination coach/baggage car built in 1914 for the P&LE and restored in 2004 stands watch out front, adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage.
Hours
The West Newton Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Parking is available at the West Newton trailhead along the Great Allegheny Passage.
