Significant storms and heavy rainfall in the region on May 12, 13 and 14 resulted in ponding water, deep ruts, downed trees, clogged culverts, and multiple washed-out trail surfaces along some sections of the Great Allegheny Passage, especially around Rockwood, Garrett, Meyersdale, Deal, Frostburg, and Cumberland. The Keystone Viaduct, Bollman Bridge and Big Savage Tunnel are open. Even in areas spared from flooding, please expect slower-than usual conditions and some bumpy spots where the top layer of limestone dust has been washed away. While floodwaters have receded in Cumberland, we recommend checking with the Allegany (Maryland) County Department of Emergency Services for updates on safety and travel. Currently, the GAP is passable all the way in and out of Cumberland, but bicyclists and hikers should proceed slowly and cautiously.
No significant storm damage occurred within Ohiopyle State Park or near Connellsville, West Newton, McKeesport, or Downtown Pittsburgh, which were spared the worst of the storm.
The neighboring C&O Canal National Historical Park remains open but we recommend checking its website for any updates to conditions, as the Potomac River is at high levels due to all the rain over those three days.
